Coronavirus: My First Experience as a Quarantined Mom

Hi. Welcome to my blog Homely Treasures. I have decided to launch my blog a few weeks earlier in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. I have been placed in quarantine for attending an event with over 500 people where one of them has been tested for this new virus. I needed to tell you my story. You need to read the truth about what it is like to receive the news you joked about but never though would get you personally.

Day 1 as a CDC ordered quarantine citizen.

3/13/2020. My husband was at home and decided to go to the grocery store to buy rice, milk, disinfectant spray, and other items. He called me to tell me he was not finding some of those things. A few minutes after his call, he forwarded me an email from the health care department of the State of Illinois. The email stated I had been exposed to the Coronavirus and I need to be in quarantine for 14 days.

I broke the news to my managers and they asked me to go home for the day. I could feel the tension in the work environment. I could hear their thoughts. “Is she sick? I can’t believe I sat next to her in that meeting. Where are the sanitizing wipes? Is the coronavirus really an issue. Will we really run out of toilet paper? Maybe I should go buy some more after work.” These questions were going through their heads.

First thing I thought about? You got it— toilet paper! No, I’m kidding. I must admit I was nervous. I didn’t know what this meant. They told me I needed to be in quarantine, but they never said how I was supposed to do it. The first things I needed were necessary items such as food and water.

After leaving work, I took advantage and went to the grocery store to search for the things my husband was not able to find. The store was packed! I couldn’t believe how this whole virus thing just blew over night. Luckily for me, and thanks to those manic toilet paper hoarders who have no need for food, I was able to find food and water. Water supply was low, though.

I went home just like any other quarantined person would and unpacked my groceries.

Now it was time to break the news to the unofficial CDC officers… my family. I have never felt so contagious in my life! I began receiving supportive and encouraging messages from family and friends. They feared for our health.

I began contemplating the idea of creating a go-fund-me page where they could feel like they were helping our cause. I discarded the idea as I saw it was too dramatic.

This is just day one as Coronavirus hostage.

Coming up next… Different things to do while in quarantine.
